Accidental damage 'costs UK £68m'

The total cost of accidental damage caused to homes by children in the UK has reached £68 million, according to new research.

Abbey's study found that 73 per cent of British families have had at least one household item or furnishing damaged by a child in the past decade, with the average cost of repairs amounting to around £140.

It was revealed that children between five and ten are more likely to damage walls and paintwork, while those in the 11-15 age bracket generally tend to break crockery or glasses.

Lloyd Wilson, head of Abbey Insurance, said: "School holidays are prime time for breakages so parents be warned.

"The cost of replacing damaged goods can come as a nasty shock. £140 or more to repair or replace broken items is no small amount to find, so it’s worth making sure your insurance policy covers every item in your home for accidental damage."
